Daniel Sherman is the author of Worthy Monuments: Art Museums and
the Politics of Culture in Nineteenth Century France (Harvard Univ.
Press, 1994)
and The Construction of Memory in Interwar France (Univ. of Chicago
Press, 1999). His current research focuses on French constructions of
a primitive
or savage "other" in the period 1945 to 1975. For
