CES European Languages Supported by FLAS Fellowships

The Center for European Studies provides funding to students who intend to study or are currently engaged in the study of the following European languages:

  • Arabic (for students with a research focus on Europe)
  • Danish
  • Dutch (Flemish)
  • Finnish (with approval from the Department of Education)
  • French (Graduate students in professional schools only)
  • Gaelic (Irish, with approval from the Department of Education)
  • German (Graduate students in professional schools only)
  • Modern Greek (with approval from the Department of Education)
  • Icelandic
  • Italian
  • Norwegian
  • Portuguese
  • Swedish
  • Turkish (with approval from the Department of Education, for students with a research focus on Europe)

Other Western European Languages
FLAS Fellowships may also be used - primarily in the summer - for the intensive study of other Western European languages, such as Catalan, Faroese, Sami, Cimbrian, etc... Please contact the FLAS coordinator, Csanád Siklós for more information.

Specific Notes about Languages

FLAS does not support the study of Spanish at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

Undergraduates can not apply for a FLAS for the study of French or German.

Undergraduates can only apply for a FLAS to study less commonly taught languages at the intermediate or advanced level.

Applications for the study of French will only be accepted from graduate students intending to pursue government service or enter a professional field.

Applications for the study of German will only be accepted from graduate students intending to pursue government service or enter a professional field.
