A Workshop for K-12 Teachers

This one-day workshop—sponsored by the Center for European Studies (CES) in collaboration with the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program (LACIS) at the UW-Madison—explores Islam in Europe from an historical perspective, combining rich content with lively discussion of teaching strategies. Audrey Shabbas, an award-winning teacher and curriculum development expert from Arab World and Islamic Resources (AWAIR) will present her curriculum “A Medieval Banquet in the Alhambra Palace,” which can be adapted for classes in social studies, art, and language arts. Participants in the workshop will gain a greater understanding of the development of Islam as well as contemporary issues and concerns surrounding Europe’s fastest-growing religion.

Open to K-12 teachers of all subject areas

$25 non-refundable registration fee

Registration Fee: $25. The registration fee is non-refundable and must be paid by check (made out to UW-Extension). Registered workshop participants receive the following at no additional cost: parking pass (provided that parking requests are made by the final registration deadline); a morning refreshment break and afternoon lunch; all workshop materials and handouts, and a copy of the Arab World Studies Notebook, edited by Audrey Shabbas (this book sells for $50).Your registration will not be processed and a space in the workshop will not be reserved for you until payment is received.

Registration Policy: The workshop is limited to 30 participants. Preference will be given to active service K-12 teachers, community arts educators, and students who are education majors (especially those engaged in or about to start student teaching).

Meals: All registered workshop participants receive a morning refreshment break and lunch during the workshop at no additional charge. Lunch will be served at the Pyle Center.
